You don't know what you don't know
Jul 08, 2024
We will start with a story today.
Last summer there was a putrid smell in our garage and I couldn’t find the source. Upside was it forced me to clean out my garage as I looked for what I thought was some sort of dead vermin. As the dog days of summer came and went, the smell lingered.
Now into the winter.
I’d ask my wife to come out and confirm that I wasn’t crazy, she’d smell it.
But sometimes she wouldn’t smell it. But, I always smelled it.
It drove me cray-zee!
Was I making it up? Why did I freaking smell it every time I was in the garage? But, my wife seemed to smell it only when I was at home.
(I didn’t smell it in my office at work, so I knew it wasn’t me!)
One day, I was getting my oil changed. The guy comes out to the waiting room looking somewhat startled. He asked if I remember running over a huge rat recently?
Nope.
He went on to inform me there had been a huge rat cooking on a hot part of my car for a while.
Ahh haa! That’s why Deborah only smelled it when I was at home. Otherwise my car wouldn’t be in the garage!
This scenario never occurred to me as a possibility.
I didn’t know what I didn’t know.
Until someone showed me......
If I had just lived in a state of denial, despite the evidence...well, then I would really be cray-zee.
Our health is the same.
You can’t walk around wondering why something isn’t working if you’re not putting in the work to change it. Denial is an easy place to go, but detrimental to hang out too long.
But, we’re human and our silly little brains are designed to usually take the path of least resistance. That’s a built-in survival technique to help us out when things go wrong. But, so often we can do that with other things too.
Like when the doctor tells you to lose weight.
“Surely, they don’t mean me (even though they’re looking directly at the only person in the room).
A health coach will help you take the blinders off and actually take action in a simpler, more manageable way.
Imagine if your temperature around food was cooled and you started living in a way that you could enter any food environment and feel e a s e . . . .
