The stories we tell ourselves
Aug 26, 2024
I visited my hometown this weekend. It’s always amazing to me how much stuff comes up for me on these trips. I love my hometown, Haughton, Louisiana. Since my father passed away 3 years ago we don’t visit very often, but when we do it’s usually filled with all the good stuff from my childhood. My favorite pizza (Johnny’s Pizza) and driving around and seeing what’s new in town.
So many stories start popping up for me. I try to be a forward thinker, but visiting my hometown always forces me to look at the past. It forces me to look at and understand the passage of time and how the stories of my childhood can still be relevant today. At the same time, the stories we often tell ourselves can be destructive as well.
I used to tell myself that God meant for me to have a larger body. So, just deal with it Michael.
I’ve since learned that is what I told myself to feel better about the fact that I wasn’t doing anything about my weight and my health. That’s destructive thinking.
My health journey started about 5 years ago when I started inviting awareness into my life.
A big part of this was uncovering those stories that I’d tell myself to help me cope with what was in front of me.
Here’s a question for you to borrow.
How long will you allow the stories you tell yourself hold you back in life and keep you from moving forward with actual change?
It’s a question only you can answer.
It’s an important question for you to uncover.
Let me know what your discoveries are from that prompt?

Here’s a picture of my father’s favorite place, the pond next to the property they owned for several decades. It brings back so many warm fuzzy memories each time I get to visit.
